Every school has the same sterotypical kids. You've got the nerd, and the jock, the foreign kid, the weirdo, the class clown. Porter was always that last one, even fresh out of the womb. The middle child in a family of five, she must have instinctively needed a way to stand out from her siblings and her peers. Apparently, making people laugh - often at the expense of her own dignity - was it. Sure, she was as athletic and as smart as the next kid, but that was no fun. She didn't want to step in line like everyone else; she just couldn't stand to be that boring. That makes it sound like she wanted to be the center of attention which, oddly enough, couldn't be further from the truth. A social introvert at her core, the reality of Porter's life is that she's a people pleaser and the public persona that she developed early on in life has become the mask that she hides behind and, ultimately, what made her career possible.

She didn't stumble upon her comedic beginnings accidentally, per se, but it wasn't entirely planned either. When the reality tv pickings were ripe - think Last Comic Standing, American Idol, et al - it was just something fun to do to go and try out. Gather together some bored ne'er-do-well friends and go make an idiot of yourself, kill an afternoon. It wasn't necessarily supposed to turn into anything and it didn't officially go anywhere; her auditions didn't merit so much as a gag reel airing. They did, however, give her the bug to start getting into stand up comedy. It went both with and against her nature. On the one hand, she loved making people laugh and being shocking, getting reactions and sparking conversations. On the other hand, the idea of standing in a literal spotlight was even more daunting than the figurative one that her class clown persona usually netted her.

While Porter doesn't consider her brand of humor particulary unique, it struck a chord with the comedy scene and within a few years of starting to do sets in local dive bars and comedy clubs, she netted her first televised gig for John Oliver. After that, normal life seemed like something that had been a figment of her imagination. Every time she thought it couldn't get any bigger, it did - she was given creative license to be cruel, lewd, and as gregarious as she dared on a regular basis. Not only that, but she was PAID to do it. It wasn't precisely a dream come true because in all honesty, she never would have dreamed of this, but it was an interesting enough journey to hold her attention and to have her pushing back that niggling little voice at the back of her head that really just wanted to be holed up in bed with a beer and the remote all day, every day.

She takes her pseudo-fame in stride, allowing the public voice to take whatever note of her it pleases, without protest. After all these years of wearing an outgoing mask, she has a strong enough sense of self to know that what's said is mere talk and that those important enough to her will know the difference, or they damn well better.
MEDIA PERCEPTION....
The fact that the media even HAS a perception of Porter is somewhat shocking given that she's not anywhere near an A-lister. Most of the buzz around her is based purely on speculation and the content of her comedic performances rather than actual fact. It's simply assumed that her personal life is a sexy, sexy trainwreck; that she drinks, smokes, and does other illicit drugs on a regular basis; and that she changes men (and women) more often than her panties. To the credit of the general public, Porter hasn't done a thing to counteract the rumor mill. Her reputation is duplicitous, but calculatedly so; if she's viewed as a larger than life, out of control hot mess, the publicity that garners simply feeds into her growing career.
